Port Overview
The port of Magway and Minbu are connected through the Magway Irrawaddy bridge. The port of Magway consists of a passenger boat ramp located in the center of Magway and a general cargo mooring point close to it. The port of Minbu is on the opposite side of the river from Magway and consists of three mooring points accessible by truck, one for general cargo and the another two mostly used for fuel. At both ports there are no jetties or berths, vessels moor at the river bank and use gangways for loading and unloading. There is no congestion and no bottlenecks (no waiting time to dock). The Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River System (DWRIRS) in Magway is responsible for daily management of the port of Magway and Minbu. Depending on the water level and mooring space for cargo shipments, the port of Minbu is more often used in the dry season (Nov to May) and the port of Magway can be used only in the wet season (June to Oct).

In Magway vessel owners have organized themselves in a committee. There are five owners that have 2 or more vessels. The vessels are 1500 GRT capacity, while in the dry season they have max 800 MT capacity because of the draft situation as water recedes. Port Performance
Port performance in 2019 was approximately 20 vessels visit per day, average 600 vessels per month. About 47,500 MT of cargo per month, mostly fuel, rice, pulses, oil, crude oil, construction materials (cement, iron bars). There is no container handling capacity.
The minimum draft of the channel from Pyay to Magway and Magway to Pakokku is 10.6m (35ft) in the wet season and in the dry season, minimum 1.5m (5ft) in four places. During dry season, there is a restriction on the maximum amount of cargo allowed due to the shallow draft of the river. There is enough mooring space and no bottlenecks reported. 2 mobile cranes with Max 5MT capacity are available for hire, however, loading and unloading are normally takes place with manual labour.

Discharge Rates and Terminal Handling Charges
Ships are charged a standard fee for use of the waterway by the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River System (DWRIRS), under the Ministry of Transport & Communications. DWRIRS charges 0.20 Kyat/MT capacity/mile, per trip (rate as of Jun 2016). This is charged at the river stations Twantay, Nyaungdong, Pyay, Magway, Mandalay and Kathar. The Sanitory Dept. under Regional government charges a docking charge per vessel per visit; this responsibility is planned to be handed over to the DWRIRS.

All loading and offloading are normally performed manually. Daily workers are normally arranged by the cargo owners with prior arrangement butrate can change from time to time.

- 8,000-12,000 MMK/day for skilled labour ((includes record keeping, tally counting and managing stack).
Hinterland Information
Cargo can be moved by truck only. There is no connection to the railway and Magway airport is not handling cargo.
