Airport Overview
Thandwe, formerly known as Sandoway, is the largest city in the area and the main gateway to Ngapali Beach. Thandwe Airport has undergone several upgrades in the past. A 500 foot runway extension work at the north portion was completed and the available length (6000 x100 feet) has been operational since August 2010. Another 2000 feet was extended and completed in May 2011 to bring it to 8000 feet. The government planned to expand the runway further to allow international flights and larger commercial planes to land. Currently, it is only able to service ATR 72/500. There are 54 flights on 4 different routes from Thandwe Airport. The most popular routes connect Thandwe to Yangon, Sittwe, Mandalay, and Kyauk Phyu. Better flight connections to international markets is expected to benefit the fisheries industry in the area as the current export practice requires frozen sea products to be shipped to international markets via Yangon.
