4.6 Madagascar Storage and Miling Companies Contact List

While storage facilities are can be find in the main towns, warehousing is not a service very developed countrywide. Industry is not very developed and most of the factories have built their own warehouses according to their needs and are not in capacity to offer or rent additional space. Out of the big cities, most of the facilities are old, not well maintained and in bad condition. A good number of warehouses belonged to parastatals during the previous regime and have since been neglected. Nerveless, few proper storage facilities are available in the countryside but are used for seasonal activities (vanilla, gloves, coffee, peanuts, cotton, etc.) and are therefore available during specific months of the year only. In most of the areas, religious communities can provide land or facilities as well.

Commercial Storage

Renting commercial storage facilities from private actors is possible. But as said previously, in the countryside, most of these facilities are owned and used by local product collectors and so available onlypartially through year. Some wholesalers can also provide warehouse facilities available all year long but out of the big town, they are only few.

Storage Used by Humanitarian Organizations

The majority of humanitarian agencies rent warehouses to private individuals or used communal government facilities.

When it has been difficult to find suitable facilities, WFP had either to renovate government warehouses (especially in the South) or approach businessmen willing to construct new warehouse (like in Toliara).

Cold Chain

Cold chain services are very difficult to find in Madagascar. Medicine / vaccine storage options are available in the biggest hospitals and clinics of the country but most of the time they have no back-up when a city power shortage occurs.

Otherwise, some private companies have some storage avilable for their activities, but it remain scarce and most of the time it only reserved for for food items like sea food products.
