Overview 

The Kailali customs office in Dhangadhi sub-metropolitan city, Ward No. 3, Trinagar Kailali is the main customs office under the Department of Customs of Nepal for Sudurpaschim province. The Kailali border crossing at Dhangadi is rated no.  9 of 27 border crossings with 1.64% of total import value (Ref: Dept. of Customs 2022/23).  

From the Kailali-Dhangadhi border crossing in Nepal the nearest cities in India are Lucknow and New Delhi. The Bhimdatta Highway connects the Customs Office to Dhangadhi city and the East-West Highway at Attariya, Nepal. Nepali immigration is open from 7am to 8pm. ATMs of different banks and foreign exchange are available in Dhangadhi around 4 Km north of the border. An extension counter of Rastriya Banijya Bank is available inside the customs area. 

The customs office does not have any warehouses within the premises, but has an open shed of 500 sqm. 7588 sqm of open space is available outside the compound wall of customs office which is across the road. The open space is suitable for non-food items, there is a national reserve forest in the Indian side of the border and many monkeys are present in the area, the authorities suggest not to store food items in the open space. In Dhangadhi city there are national transport companies available, such as Pashupati and Shivashakti company.

Other Relevant Information 

The delays at the Kailali-Dhangadi Border Post can be extensive – from 2 days to a week-long but the integrated check, post (ICP) in Birgunj can process goods quicker than this custom office.  

Major imports from this office are petroleum products, mill machinery, food grains, biscuits, motor parts and industrial raw materials and exported from this office: Rosin, Turpentine and Kaththa. 

Other facilities: Bank facility within the office premises for revenue filing, office for import and export. Animal Quarantine is at 1.5 km and Plant Quarantine and Food Quarantine Office is located at a distance of 2.5 km.
